Fighting the Good Fight before Charleston

"Be bold enough to use your voice, brave enough to listen to your heart, and strong enough to live the life you've always inagined."                                                                                                           Unknown

My intentions are good and pure to do a blog post weekly.  And, then life happens, even on a self-gifted Sabbatical.  Fiercely fighting a cold the week before going to Charleston, I laid low (for me, anyway).  Although even then, I did have to take advantage of some of the offerings of NYC.  A friend, the founding director of the International  Women’s Artist Salon, told me about the really interesting lecture series Platform for Pedagogy. (Most of the lectures are free.)  It was through them that I thoroughly enjoyed a lecture given by Ariana Huffington at Columbia!  From the website: The Chazen Institutes Global Leadership Matrix (GLeaM) invites you to join Arianna Huffington discuss how the Third Metric relates to both current and future global leadership challenges. The event will be accompanied by a book signing of Huffington’s latest and 14th book, Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.
It was a fascinating lecture by one of the most respected Women of my generation.  Two years into creating the Huffington Post, 18-hour workdays were normal for her.  After arriving home from work one night, she collapsed in her home office, hitting her head as she fell.  Doctors ran numerous tests to discover the cause, but found nothing beyond sheer exhaustion.  It was then she says she realized that sleep-deprivation is not a badge of honor worth wearing.

“By professional definitions of success, I was successful. By any sane definition of success, if you are lying in a pool full of blood on the floor of your office, you are not successful,” she claimed.
Huffington now believes that these professional definitions of success-money and power-are a distorted view of living. They are missing what she considers the third metric—thriving.  Hence her book, and discussion that night focused on these four pillars as she called them:

My personal take away from that evening?  I am doing exactly what I should be for myself, right now, at this time in my life.  I am so glad when “People” confirm what I know to be true for me!  Many people I meet and explain how and why I am fulfilling my dreams, congratulate me.  They think I’m “brave.”  I simply know I was, and am, saving my life, literally.  I am so grateful for the people that understand, and yes, respect that.  (I desperately try to be patient and calm with those that worry about me not having a “job.”)
Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL)
From the SIBL website
On that note, I am, as always, taking advantage of one of my favorite institutions in NYC, the New York Public Library.  Earlier in the day of my Columbia lecture, I went to the Science Industry and Business Library (SIBL) in Midtown for a lecture “Interviewing: How to Get Them and Prepare for Them”.  Daunting and scary.  Later in the week I was back taking “Work Search Orientation” which was sponsored by AARP!  Yes, sad but true, I am now in that demographic.  What I did find interesting, was that some of the simple assessments we took actually pointed me in a direction I am considering!
Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDSIn between my coughing bouts, I managed to do three shifts with Broadway Cares’ Bucket Brigade.  It’s actually quite easy, and quick, simply collecting money at the end of Broadway performances for Equity Fights AIDS.  But, what was thrilling, for me, was that twice I collected at Les Miserables.  At that theatre we go through the back door, literally onto the stage!  I was able to catch a glimpse of “Epilogue: Valjean's Death” with Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Marius and Éponine and then the “Finale:  Do You Hear the People Sing from backstage!
Artisinal Bistro
Always, I manage to eat.  One of my favorite bartenders from Sojourn has started a small event company, AW Presents, and a group of lovely people enjoyed a wonderful wine tasting dinner at Afghan Kebob lead by “Brunello Bob.”  A delightful evening.  Then, the night before I left for Charleston I had the true pleasure of catching up with former patients, and a member the Artemis Bookclub (which alas has disbanded since I left Boston), at one of my favorites, Artisinal Bistro!

All in all, not bad for a week where I didn’t feel well! shared by LIORA www.twinflame1111.com <3 <3
